Using Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) Financing to Make Buildings Better
Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) financing is expanding rapidly across Michigan and the country. This event will provide information detailing how to use this new financing option for upgrading the energy efficiency of commercial, industrial, multi-family and non-profit buildings. U.S. buildings are, on average, over 50 years old and typically waste more than 30% of consumed energy. The required capital for energy efficiency, water conservation, and renewable energy projects is a major deterrent to going forward with these upgrades. Using the same mechanism that funds streets, sidewalks, sewers and other community projects, PACE makes these upgrades financially “doable”. This financing option can be applied to all systems supporting those upgrades including lighting, HVAC, roofing, insulation, windows and other building envelope improvements. For communities such as Grand Rapids, which recently became a 2030 District with a stated goal of a 50% reduction in energy use by 2030, PACE is one of the most attractive financing vehicles to make this goal achievable. It answers the question “how are we going to pay for it?”
